The Pop -Up Chat Box is designed for smaller group discussions, bringing members together for a one off conversation. No recording, no follow up notes. This event is limited to 25. Please book early and be sure you will attend so that all spaces are utilized.

This program is offered at 11:00 am EST, 4pm London. Please convert your time zone.

Routinely balancing parenting and/or caregiving and work has challenging moments, but many would agree the intensity, unpredictability, variety, and duration of challenges over the last two years is greater than we have ever experienced. As the world of work continues to shift, and we map out hybrid teams, remote working, and for some, full return to the office. This Pop Up ChatBox offers a chance for all League members who are parents or caregivers to come together in a welcoming and understanding space to commiserate over some of our obstacles, share how we navigated them, and seek support for unresolved challenges.

Not a parent or caregiver? You, especially managers of parents/caregivers, are welcome to join the conversation to listen and better understand our collective plight!

Everyone has unique circumstances and we would love the chance to make sense of themes and similarities from individual situations. Discuss what worked for you, learn from someone else and find solidarity in conversation.

SPEAKERS/FACILITATOR(S):

Dr. Marisa Atencio is an enthusiastic volunteer and participant in Global Leadership League programs. She is the Assistant Dean and Director of Global education at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, GA, and previously led ISSS teams for 20 years at large, public universities in the southeastern U.S. In this role, she focuses on intercultural learning and partners with her DEI colleagues to expand access to and inclusion in experiences which promote intercultural skills development and cultural humility. She is a parent of a 13 and 10 year old who, for 95% of the last 2 years, have been going to school virtually while both parents work remotely from their cozy house. Thankfully, she lives in an amazing walkable community with lots of parks- yes, they really do exist in Atlanta.

Pouneh Eftekhari is a scholar-practitioner who has worked in multiple roles related to internationalization at home and education abroad in the USA, Denmark, Spain, and Sweden. She has also conducted research for a number of European-level organizations and projects. Today, Pouneh works with sustainable internationalization and virtual exchange at Lund University (SE) while also researching the impact of disciplinary culture on the internationalization of the curriculum at home at the Centre for Internationalisation of Education, University of Groningen (NL). As a first-time parent to a 13-month old, Pouneh continues to navigate the unique circumstances of parenting as an expat during a pandemic.

Coryn Shiflet serves on the Global Leadership League's executive team as Director of Partnerships and works at Georgia Tech managing graduate fellowships. She is a seasoned international educator with 15 years of experience in the field working at private and public universities in the US and the UK. Having studied international students during her master’s degree, Coryn has since worked in international student and scholar services, education abroad, university relations in the context of global internships, and international education research and analysis. She is a parent to a 5 year old, now Kindergartener, and after being pregnant at the start of the pandemic, also has a 15 month old.
