Join the League Lasso quarterly program to explore the concept of autoethnography. Autoethnography is a form of writing that connects personal experiences to wider cultural, political, and social meanings and understandings. It is considered a form of qualitative research; however, it can also be used by practitioners as an avenue of reflexive writing. This session will provide an overview of autoethnography. The discussion will explore how to connect reflexive writing as a tool for personal growth and professional development. In addition, participants will consider how this writing style could be used with students for on-site reflections and/or post-study abroad experiences. The presentation will be led by anthropologist Dr. Cassandra White, followed by Q&A. The session will last one hour, and the Zoom room will remain open afterwards for anyone wanting to stay and connect further.

Dr. Cassandra White

Cassandra White is a cultural/medical anthropologist whose primary research focus over the last two decades has been on the experiences of people affected by Hansen’s Disease (leprosy) in Brazil and the United States. She has conducted research in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and among first generation migrants to the U.S. on this topic. Dr. White has traveled to and conducted research in Brazil since 1992, and she has directed seven Georgia State University study abroad programs/ethnographic field schools in Rio de Janeiro. She worked with students on collaborative research in Rio de Janeiro on urban transformations associated with the World Cup (2014) and Olympic Games (2016). Dr. White has also conducted research on several topics, including racial and class identity perceptions among Brazilian immigrants to Atlanta; xenophobia and leprosy treatment in the United States; religious experience and televised mediumship in the U.S; the lived experience of extended breastfeeding/chestfeeding in the United States; and most recently, the nexus of climate change, migration, and health.
